History of Hilo Hattie: To take advantage of Hawaiian Tourism, Pomare was founded in 1963  by 25 years-0ld James S. Romig. A native of Washington State, he graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in accounting in 1960 and went to work for Boeing Corp in Seattle as a financial analyst. Also, in 1963 Romig opened his first store “Kaluma Hawaii Sportswear” on  island of Kauai. To maintain growth, in 1979 Pomare purchase the Margolis Manufacturing and Retail Company, in Hilo. Romig focused the business on resort shops. Evelyn and Richard Margolis owned the rights to the stage name of Hawaiian Educator/turned entertainer Clarissa Haili aka Hilo Hattie. They had become her partners on 1971 to develop a line of Hilo Hattie brand clothing. One of her most popular song and dance numbers was “When Hilo Hattie Does the Hilo Hop”, hence the name. A Margolis painting of a broadly, sweet smiling Haili, who died the year of the purchase, adorns a wall at the corporate offices of Pomare Ltd., Hilo Hattie’s parent company. The first mainland store was; City of Orange, California in 1998, 2002 was Las Vegas and 2005 San Diego, CA.  Paul de Ville is the President and CEO.
