Description
Vintage 1970’s Rare Mrs. H. Winter; (aka: Harriet Winter) Black Studded Wool Coat with Suede Scarf. This is gorgeous coat, and rare find. The seams of the coat are exposed as a decorative detail outlining the jacket front, collar, pockets, around the arms and shoulders. In an interview, the question was asked of Ms. Winter “Why the exposed seams”; her response “We live with lines and texture all day”. The exposed seams are depicted more in picture number 4. None of the studs are missing, and in picture #10 those aren’t holes, but, studs that pierced through to the inside of the coat. Light wear to the suede scarf. The coat collar height is 2″ and coat does have shoulder pads. The coat tag states size 6, 100% wool and sleeves (only) lined in 100% satin. Please use measurements that I have provided below. Excellent Vintage Condition. Happy to provide any additional pictures.
Measurements of garment were taken lying flat: Please double; Bust 20 1/2″, Waist 21 1/2″, Hips 25 1/2. Actual; Sleeve length 23 1/2″, Shoulder to hemline 44″, Scarf 5″W x 61″L.
History of Harriet Winter: She called herself “Mrs. H. Winter”, because, I’m married and I’m proud of it. Her husband, which was her business partner, gave her $2, 200, an assistant and an iron, to go into dress designing, that was in 1972. (I acquired information from two different articles written 1978 and 1979 respectively from The Washington Post and The New York Times). Before that they had been in the antique clothing business under the name “Yesterday News”-(that label is attached to coat and pictured in the last picture of photos) selling to musicals like “Hair and “Grease” as well as several stores across the country.
Her clothes are characteristically soft and unlined. Her best designs are jackets with big shoulders, not necessarily padded, with seams on the outside and with shape achieved through deft use shirring, drawstring and cut.
