History of Designer: Adolfo, born Adolfo Sardina, born in Cardenas Cuba on February 15, 1933 (84 years young). Mr. Adolfo career began as a milliner. Had an apprenticeship with Cristobal Balenciaga in Paris and with Chanel. American buyers admired his work and encouraged him to come to New York. In 1953 he became designer for the milliner Emme. Adolfo hats earned him his first Coty Award in 1955. In 1962 Adolfo started his own business. His theory if he design a hat he could design anything. Adolfo started making his Chanel-inspired suits and his unusual evening gowns. In 1969 he was presented with a special Coty Award for his contribution to design from head to toe. The rest became fashion history. However, in 1993 he closed his salon doors at 36 East 57th Street in New York. He licenses his name in exchange for royalties to manufacturers of men’s wear to hats. Here is a quote I found by Adolfo, “If people are astute enough to combine different clothes with flair and style, they can create their own fashion. We all must maintain the freedom to show off individuality”. Love that!!
