History of Harriet Winter (Mrs. H. Winter): Harriet Winter launched her dress designing career in 1972, six years prior to when the first article was written.  She proudly used the label "Mrs. H. Winter," stating, "I'm married and I'm proud of it." (Information acquired from The Washington Post and The New York Times, 1978 and 1979).
Her husband, her business partner, gave her $2, 200, an assistant and an iron to go into dress designing.

Prior to launching her eponymous label, the Winters were highly successful in the antique clothing business under the name "Yesterday News." They sold period garments to major musicals like Hair and Grease, as well as stores nationwide. (The "Yesterday News" label is also attached to this coat and is pictured in the final photo.)

Winter's signature designs are characteristically soft and unlined. Her most recognized pieces, like this coat, are jackets featuring a strong shoulder line (not necessarily padded), exposed seams on the outside, and shape achieved through the deft use of shirring, drawstrings, and expert cut.
